Welcome to Integrate This! Why Pedagogy Must Always Come First
If you’ve spent more than five minutes in a K-12 classroom lately, you know the feeling: another month, another shiny new app promising to "revolutionize" education. We’re often handed a piece of software and told to figure out how to use it.
But as educators, we know that puts the cart before the horse.
Welcome to the very first post of Integrate This! We’re Jeremy and David, and we started this blog because we believe that great learning happens when technology serves teaching—never the other way around.
When you start with a tool and try to force it into a lesson, it usually leads to frustration. But when you start with a pedagogical goal—like improving student collaboration, increasing accessibility, or checking for understanding—technology becomes a powerful amplifier for good instruction.
What You Can Expect From Us Every Monday and Wednesday, we’ll be sharing practical, no-nonsense strategies designed specifically for K-12 teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders. We aren’t here to just review software; we’re here to solve classroom and administrative problems.
Here is what you’ll find in our posts:
Pedagogy First: We will always look at tech through an instructional lens. If an app doesn’t improve the learning experience or save you time, we won’t waste your time talking about it.
Targeted Ideas: You’ll be able to easily search our posts by Elementary, Middle, or High School tags so you can find age-appropriate applications for your students.
Smarter Workflows: Teacher burnout is real. We’ll regularly share ways to use tech to automate lesson prep, streamline grading, and handle parent communication so you can get your prep period back.
Safe for Students: We know how crucial data privacy is. We keep standards like FERPA and COPPA front and center so you and your admin can feel confident in the tools we discuss.
Join the Conversation We don’t want this to be a one-way street. Whether you’ve found an amazing workaround for a frustrating platform, or you’re completely stuck trying to digitize a specific project, let us know in the comments.
To kick things off, we are starting a tradition that you will see at the bottom of every single post we write: The "Try It Tomorrow" takeaway. We know your time is valuable, so we will always leave you with one quick, actionable step you can take immediately.
🛠️ Try It Tomorrow
For our very first takeaway, we challenge you to a quick, 5-minute "Tech Audit":
Pick one digital tool you currently require your students to use every week.
Ask yourself the "Pedagogy First" question: What is the specific learning goal this tool helps achieve that couldn't be done on paper? (e.g., Does it offer real-time feedback? Does it allow for multimedia expression? Does it connect them with an outside audience?)
If you can't easily answer it, consider if that tool is actually serving your classroom, or just taking up bandwidth!
Let us know how your audit went in the comments below, and we'll see you soon for our next post!
